Frankfurt airport quarterly cargo volume falls 2pc to 511,355 tonnes

First quarter throughput at FRA fell two per cent year on year to 511,355 tonnes, according to traffic figures from the airport management company.

The drop in cargo volumes at most of the Fraport group's airports was blamed on Hurricane Niklas raging through northern Europe on March 31 and the four-day Lufthansa pilot strike, reported Atlanta area Air Cargo World.

Strike-related intercontinental flight cancellations affected cargo because it reduced available belly-hold space, Fraport said.

The only airport in the group that achieved cargo traffic growth in the first quarter was Lima, Peru, with volume up 6.4 per cent to 64,710 tonnes.

Cargo throughput fell three per cent at Ljubljana, Slovenia, to 2,296 tonnes; Burgas, Bulgaria, was down 17.6 per cent, processing only 1,358 tonnes of cargo; and Varna, Bulgaria, handled just 18 tonnes, down 100 per cent year on year.
