DIGITALIZATION – A NEW GATEWAY FOR VIETNAM’S LOGISTICS SECTOR

It is evident that digitalization has become the defining trend of the modern era. Across all industries and sectors, businesses are shifting from traditional development strategies to automation and digital transformation, aiming to optimize operational efficiency and productivity.

As a vital “artery” of the national economy, the logistics industry plays a pivotal role in the movement of goods, generating high added value and contributing significantly to enhancing the country’s overall competitiveness. Recognizing this importance, one of the key national goals set forth for improving the competitiveness and development of Vietnam’s logistics services by 2025 — under Decision No. 221/QĐ-TTg issued by the Prime Minister on February 22, 2021 — is to focus on research, application, and technology transfer, alongside technical advancements, to accelerate digital transformation in the logistics sector.

In practice, many logistics enterprises in Vietnam have proactively implemented advanced technological solutions such as Transport Management Systems (TMS), Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), order management software, Internet of Things (IoT) for container tracking, Blockchain for traceability, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for supply chain data analytics. These applications not only help optimize costs and improve accuracy but also enhance the overall customer experience.

However, despite notable progress, Vietnam’s logistics industry still faces several challenges in its digital transformation journey. These include limited technological infrastructure, a shortage of highly skilled IT personnel, and especially a significant gap in the level of technology adoption between large enterprises and small and medium-sized businesses.

To overcome these barriers, strong collaboration is essential between businesses, government agencies, and technology support organizations. Joint efforts will be crucial in advancing a comprehensive digital transformation roadmap, enabling Vietnam’s logistics sector to elevate its position in the regional and global markets.
