OPENING THE DOMESTIC CONTAINER SHIPPING ROUTE AT CHAN MAY PORT IN EARLY DECEMBER 2022

According to the leader of Chan May Port Joint Stock Company, opening goods for the first domestic container shipment at Chan May port on December 4 will be Hai An Transport and Handling Joint Stock Company (Hai Phong City). ) with a frequency of 01 week/trip.

According to the master plan on development of Vietnam's seaport system in the period of 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1579/QD-TTg dated September 22, 2021, the port Thua Thien - Hue seaport is identified as a class I seaport.

In particular, Chan May wharf area includes general, container, bulk, liquid/gas cargo berths, combined with receiving international passenger ships, directly serving Chan May - Lang Co economic zone and surrounding areas, combine freight forwarding to Laos and the northeastern region of Thailand; receive cargo ships of up to 70,000 tons, container ships of up to 4,000 TEUs or larger, international passenger ships of up to 225,000 GT, liquid/gas cargo ships of up to 150,000 tons or more. Chan May port area has been supplemented by the Ministry of Transport with the ability to operate container ships.

Mr. Huynh Van Toan, General Director of Chan May Port Joint Stock Company, said that currently, about 200,000 TEUs are currently passing through Chan May port to/from Da Nang port from Quang Tri, Quang Binh and Thua Thien provinces. Hue and some provinces of Laos. If using Chan May port instead of Da Nang port, it will save customers about 70 USD/round trip.

Up to now, Chan May wharf area has been invested to build three wharfs with a total length of 910 m, the ability to clear goods from 5-6 million tons/year. Currently, the port is operating two berths with a total length of 760 m with wharf number 1 480 m and berth 2 280 m, ensuring a safe depth of 9.4 m - 12.5 m below the water surface. Every year, Chan May port handles about 3.5 million tons of bulk cargo such as coal, clinker cement, wood chips, sand, tapioca... The traffic routes connecting to Chan May port have also been fully invested. In addition, Chan May wharf area has been supplemented with the capacity to operate container ships.

According to the leader of Chan May port, the volume of goods passing through Chan May port is increasing, it is expected that in 2022, the throughput will be about 4 - 4.5 million tons. The fact that Chan May wharf area can operate container ships, along with the speed of economic recovery after the pandemic, the volume of goods of enterprises in the province will increase; combined with the exploitation of goods from Laos and northeast Thailand, it is forecasted that by 2030, the volume of goods passing through Chan May port will be about 20-25 million tons/year.

Previously, on September 9, 2022, the first international container ship of Voyager Logistics SDN BHD with Malaysian nationality docked at Chan May port, marking an important milestone in the deployment of container ship operations at Chan May port. Chan May port.

Determining its role as an important maritime route of the region, recently on October 8, 2022, the People's Committee of Thua Thien - Hue province held a conference to promote investment of container shipping lines in Chan May port with the attendance of hundreds of delegates from management agencies, international organizations, shipping lines, port operators, logistics, investors.

Speaking at this conference, Mr. Nguyen Van Phuong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Thua Thien - Hue province said: Currently, the current development trend of domestic and international freight transport is shifting from transportation. Bulk goods are converted to containerized goods, because this is a method with many advantages such as cost reduction, modernization of physical and technical facilities, increased labor productivity.... “The development of Chan May port, especially attracting container shipping lines to do cargo handling at the port, is a prerequisite for industrial development of Thua Thien - Hue province and the central region", Mr. Phuong emphasized.

The People's Council of Thua Thien - Hue province has issued Resolution No. 18/2022/NQ-HDND dated September 7, 2022 on piloting a number of policies to support shipping lines to open container shipping routes and other objects. goods are transported by container to and from Chan May port, Thua Thien - Hue province.

The resolution aims to encourage and attract container shipping lines and businesses with import and export activities to do cargo at Chan May port. Accordingly, Thua Thien - Hue province is expected to spend a budget of  18 billion/year to support shipping lines.

Specifically, container carriers at the port with a minimum frequency of 2 trips/month are supported at VND 210 million/trip; Enterprises, organizations and individuals importing and exporting container goods to and from the port are supported from VND 800,000 to VND 1,100,000/container.
